Smart Farming & Climate-Smart Agriculture
Smarter Farming. Stronger Communities. Sustainable Livelihoods.
Helping Communities Grow More Sustainably Through Practical Skills and Climate-Smart Agriculture
Agriculture plays an important role in the lives and livelihoods of communities across Siaya County. Yet changing weather patterns, limited resources, environmental degradation, and barriers to market access can make farming increasingly challenging.
Through the Siaya Green Initiative, we have supported young farmers and community members in learning climate-smart agricultural techniques, developing nurseries, practicing agroforestry, and exploring innovative methods of food production.
Adapting Agriculture to a Changing Environment
For Potential X-Factor, smart farming is not simply about introducing new technology. It is about helping people make informed decisions and apply appropriate agricultural methods that work for their circumstances.
Practical Knowledge. Responsible Resources. Stronger Livelihoods.
Practical Learning Through Make Siaya Green Again
In 2025, Potential X-Factor implemented Make Siaya Green Again, the first phase of the Siaya Green Initiative, in collaboration with Let's Plant e.V.

Growing Food With Available Resources
Vertical gardening was one of the practical approaches introduced during the initiative.
Connecting Agriculture With Environmental Restoration
Agroforestry brings trees and agricultural activities together to support more diverse and resilient landscapes.

Learning That Supports Practical Action
The August 2025 project closure report documented the following outcomes from the wider Make Siaya Green Again project:
40+
Young Farmers Trained
More than 40 young farmers participated in agricultural and environmental skills development, exceeding the original target of 15.

Make Siaya Green Again · 2025
75%
Reported Adoption of Farming Practices
The project's monitoring findings indicated that approximately 75% of participants adopted practices introduced through the training.

Vertical Gardens Established
The project reported establishing more than four vertical gardens using practical, resource-conscious approaches.

The closure report also stated that approximately 40% of youth participants started income-generating activities involving vegetable sales.
These figures are historical results from the broader Make Siaya Green Again project. They should not be interpreted as current farm productivity, verified ongoing business income, or outcomes exclusive to a standalone Smart Farming program.
From Farming Skills to Economic Opportunity
Potential X-Factor aims to build on these lessons by connecting environmental projects with entrepreneurship and opportunities for young people to participate in the green economy.
What Our Experience Has Taught Us
These lessons continue to shape the organization's approach.
Water Resilience, Better Monitoring and Green Enterprise
Siaya Green Initiative 2026 proposes improvements to nursery infrastructure, bamboo and fruit-tree agroforestry, water access, training, and digital project monitoring.
Site assessments and technical engagements undertaken in 2026 have helped identify implementation needs, particularly around water access, maintenance, and institutional readiness.
The original plan includes
- A solar-powered water pumping system.
- Expanded nursery sites.
- Digital tools for documenting planting activities and connecting bamboo growers with prospective buyers.
These are proposed project components, not confirmed completed installations or operating systems.

Growing Beyond Production
Together, these initiatives represent a proposed pathway from sustainable production to practical skills, product development, and market participation.
