Restoration & youth livelihoods
Each phase has its own project dates, targets, activities, reports, and implementation status.
Restoring the Environment While Creating Opportunity
Communities in Siaya face interconnected environmental and economic challenges, including degraded landscapes, unreliable rainfall, pressure on natural resources, and limited livelihood opportunities for young people.
Planting trees is an important response, but lasting restoration also requires access to water, continued care for seedlings, practical training, and opportunities for communities to benefit economically from sustainable production.
Siaya Green Initiative addresses these challenges by connecting environmental restoration with local skills development, community participation, and pathways to green enterprise.
From Planting Trees to Growing Sustainable Livelihoods
Environmental Restoration
Support tree planting, agroforestry, and the rehabilitation of degraded land.
Community Nurseries
Strengthen local seedling production and community participation in plant care.
Skills & Training
Build practical knowledge in climate-smart agriculture, nursery management, and sustainable production.
Water Resilience
Address water-access challenges that affect seedling survival and nursery operations.
Monitoring & Transparency
Document project activities, planting sites, growth, and survival through field records and photographs.
Green Market Access
Develop connections between bamboo growers and prospective buyers to support future income opportunities.
Our Journey: From Restoration to Green Enterprise
2025
Make Siaya Green Again: Building the Foundation
Make Siaya Green Again focused on community-based agroforestry, climate-smart agriculture, youth training, seedling production, tree distribution, and community nurseries.
Its closure report documents substantial participation and environmental outputs, alongside lessons about water access, seedling survival, and long-term sustainability.
2026
Siaya Green Initiative 2026: Scaling Agroforestry and Market Access
Siaya Green Initiative 2026 aims to strengthen bamboo and fruit-tree nursery networks, improve irrigation, expand practical training, introduce digital monitoring, and create a route to market for growers.
Documented implementation activities include assessments of prospective school sites and engagement with technical organizations to identify water infrastructure and training needs.

Following Progress Beyond Planting Day
Environmental restoration requires continued care, observation, and accountability.

School site verification
Five prospective school sites were physically assessed in August 2026. The assessments reviewed water access, land suitability, institutional readiness, and site protection needs.
Subsequent technical engagements included water assessments at two priority schools and discussions with KEFRI about future bamboo training.
The report does not establish that these five sites had completed planting. The KEFRI training remained deferred, and potential water infrastructure support was not confirmed as installed.

Connecting Bamboo Production With Economic Opportunity
Bamboo cultivation offers opportunities to connect environmental restoration with sustainable enterprise.
This marketplace is intended to improve visibility for growers and create a clearer pathway between sustainable production and market demand.
